It’s that time of year again. The summer season is winding down and kids are (yay!) back to school for a new year of learning. As an adult, it doesn’t matter how many years you’ve been out of school; there’s something about the cooling temperatures and the leaves changing that still makes us feel like it’s time to get “back” to work and “back” to being more productive.
Channel that productivity and tackle a course in energy efficiency. Here are some tips to help you get an A+:
- Welcome back. Start the school year fresh and consider adding energy efficient steps to your morning routine. Ask the kids to turn the water off while brushing their teeth and make sure to turn off the lights, TV and radio before leaving the house. When you’re ready to head out the door, go together or open the door as few times as possible to avoid losing energy.
- Put those math skills to work. Since the kids have gone back to school, there are likely fewer people at home during the day. Here’s some fun math for you- you can save as much as 1% on your heating bill for every 1° you turn back your thermostat while you are away. Take advantage of a programmable thermostat to do the work for you and reduce your fuel consumption.
- Energy efficient lunch break. When you’re packing that brown bag lunch in the morning, take the food you need out of the refrigerator and then close the door. Keeping the door open forces your fridge to work harder to keep the temperature consistent. You can even get the kids involved by having them help reorganize and move their favorite after-school snacks closer to the front of the shelf.
- Go for the extra credit. You’re doing great so why not go for the extra credit! Fall is a great time to schedule a tune-up to make sure your system is ready for the winter heating season.
